Pathway to the Profession Program

For more than 130 years, Murdoch Clarke has played a leading role in the Tasmanian legal profession. Our longevity is grounded in a commitment to excellence and a strong focus on developing and supporting the next generation of lawyers.

An aspect of our Pathway to the Profession Program is designed for law students in their second-last or final year who are ready to take the next step toward a career in law. We are always keen to hear from intelligent, motivated, and personable students who are interested in gaining practical experience in a dynamic legal environment.

Our Summer Clerkship is a two-week paid placement, typically held between January and February each year. During the program, you will work alongside our lawyers and Partners, guided by a dedicated mentor, and gain valuable insight into the realities of legal practice.

As a clerk, you can expect to:

  • Gain exposure to a variety of practice areas, including criminal, family, commercial, and civil litigation
  • Undertake legal research and assist on active matters
  • Attend court and observe proceedings
  • Experience the pace and diversity of one of Tasmania’s busiest legal practices

We aim to provide a meaningful experience that helps you identify your strengths, refine your interests, and build confidence as you begin your professional journey.

Clerkship dates are flexible within the January–February period and can be tailored to accommodate your academic and personal commitments.

Pathway to the Profession Program

An aspect of our Pathway to the Profession Program is designed for final year law students who are preparing to take the next step toward admission and beyond. If you are approaching completion of your Bachelor of Laws and planning to undertake your Legal Practice Course, we encourage you to get in touch and start the conversation about your future with us.

We are always interested in connecting with driven, capable, and personable students who are looking to build a long-term career in law. Through our program, you may have the opportunity to begin working with us on a part-time basis while you complete your studies, gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a real legal environment.

Working alongside our experienced lawyers and Partners, you will:

  • Assist with legal research and contribute to active matters
  • Gain exposure across a broad range of practice areas
  • Develop practical skills and professional confidence
  • Experience the day-to-day operations of a busy and diverse legal practice

Our goal is to support you as you transition from student to practitioner, providing meaningful experience and guidance as you complete your Legal Practice Course and move toward admission.
