Victims of Crime Compensation

Being a victim of crime is not only a terrible experience but it can also leave you out of pocket for wages, medical bills and the like. Few offenders have the ability to pay you anything, but the State Government runs a Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme whereby victims can be compensated for their pain and suffering and many out of pocket expenses. Strict time limits apply, so contact Murdoch Clarke to be advised of your rights about making a claim.

Making A Claim

Claims are made through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Commissioner. An application needs to be completed which normally includes relevant medical reports, statements and proof of any loss. Care needs to be taken when preparing the application to ensure that all possible claims are made.

Hearing

Hearings are informal and are conducted in private by the Commissioner. You normally need to attend and you can be represented by a lawyer.

Compensation

You can be awarded up to $50,000.00 for your claim. Awards depend upon the seriousness of the offence and whether you have any ongoing or permanent problems.
